And just like that, Christmas has come and gone. I hope you made the most of it by spending it with or getting in touch with those you love. We are only two weeks into winter even though the holiday season is quickly winding down. For those of us on the East Coast, bundling up is a must.
I used to cringe at the thought of winter because it meant no one would see the outfit I was wearing underneath my coat. This season, I stepped up my coat game with some statement coats in heavy fabrics to keep me warm. Sure I don’t have a lot of closet space but I still stocked up my winter closet with coats of different styles for perfect winter styling. Here are few tips on looking put together when dressing for winter.
Size up if you plan on wearing layers underneath your coat
I wear a larger size coat for bulky sweaters and knits and take my normal size if I’m wearing lighter fabrics. I had my eye on a teddy bear coat for a while but was apprehensive about bulk. When I saw this knee-length version (I’m short so it’s a bit longer) at Eloquii, I knew I just had to have it. I wanted a nice fit, flattering fit but decided to size up because I would most likely wear sweaters and thicker fabrics underneath come winter. This coat has been such a transition piece as autumn leaves fell and made way for dreary and frigid winter temps.

Color Play is fun
This season, I snagged myself this dreamy faux fur-sleeved coat in a vibrant color. It’s such a statement in electric blue and is a standout piece. Opt for a pop of color if you want your outfit to stand out on the street.

Go For Length
I hate wearing short coats if I’m wearing midi dresses or evening gowns. I love wearing ankle grazing coats like this black one from Unreal Fur I pulled from Rent the Runway. It hits right at the ankle and covers my gowns so that I can make a true statement upon entry into any event.

Alter Vintage Fur/Faux Fur Coats
I love thrifting for vintage faux fur coats but most of them tend to be too long or look a bit too out of date. I’ve taken several faux fur coats to my tailor for alterations. I usually have him cut it in half to make a cropped or waist length coat I can wear with evening attire or jeans. Opt for someone more experienced if you have expensive real fur.

Pattern Play
One of my favorite coats this season is this black and white houndstooth and plaid coat from Eloquii. It’s such a statement in itself and turns heads each time I wear it. I love mixing patterns so it’s natural to do the same with my coats.

Make the Coat Dress Your Friend
Take cues from Kate Middleton and wear a coat dress instead. You kill two birds with one stone. Just wear a light dress underneath and make a statement with a coat dress like this one from Girl With Curves (sold out). I sometimes add a wide belt to make my coat a lot more flattering at the waist.
