Cannes, France has been struck by its third high-profile jewelry heist in three months. Jewel thieves struck twice in May during the Cannes Film Festival, making off with $1 million worth of Chopard jewelry and a De Grisogono necklace valued at $2.6 million.
An armed robber made off with 40 million euros ($53 million at current exchange), in jewels from the Carlton hotel on the Boulevard de la Croisette on Sunday morning, reported the local media. The gems were reportedly destined for a temporary exhibition at the hotel.
Police officials could not be reached for comment. A receptionist at the Carlton hotel declined comment.
