Purple Reigns on the Fall Runway

September 5, 2008

Purple reigns supreme on the fall runways. From Christian Dior to Ralph Lauren and every designer in between, the regal color Purple has taken over as the autumn color.

Christian Dior
At Dior, boxy Jackie O inspired coats and mod prints and shapes ruled the runway. The monochromatic look of purple on the Dior models captured the season’s it color down to a science. Models in Barbarella style eye makeup and hair looked chic in shirt dresses, coats and silk print dresses.

Erdem
On the opposite end of the design spectrum was Erdem’s feminine dresses and outerwear. Models were outfitted in purple and black combinations for the runway at Erdem. It was frilly frocks and pleated strapless dresses so decadent and sweet as candy.

J.Crew
J.Crew manages to wow each season with it’s fall collection. J.Crew’s fall 08 collection is perhaps one of my favorites of the past four seasons. Purple, eggplant, royal violet and tulip were evident in their collection. Long sleeve shift dresses, bell sleeve coats, cashmere sweaters and shoes all in purple are affordable and chic. Glamazons on a budget need not sacrifice style and luxury because of price. J.Crew has a wonderful collection of trendy yet timeless pieces at reasonable prices. An easy way to get in the purple haze is to start with a nice cashmere sweater in purple.

Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta, master of elegance and femininity also captured purple in a very regal manner with silk print skirts and dresses, cashmere sweaters and tweeds in purple.

Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren’s timeless collection of plaids, tweeds, jackets and dresses in purple was also a standout. His collection is mature with an understated sexiness that personifies the high class exec or uber sophisticated 30something metropolitan woman. Envision Samantha from SATC or one of the girls from Lipstick Jungle or Cashmere Mafia in Lauren’s collection.

Versace
Rounding out the purple reign is Versace, whose elegant printed dresses captured the free spirit with elegant dresses in fab prints. The lattice work and train on the evening gown is classic.

Purple is an easily flattering color for most skin tones. The jewel toned color works very well with gold or even silver. For the fall, gold should be a staple in your closet for jewel toned colors. Gold resonates the romance and depth of autumn without looking or feeling povo. Silver tends to cheapen rich colors, especially in the colder months of the year. Invest in good quality jewelry and accessories because if you are going to go lux, you might as well go all the way.
