British theater stars walked the red carpet this weekend for the Laurence Olivier Theatre Awards at the Theatre Royal in London this weekend. For us Americans, the Olivier Awards is equivalent the prestigious Tony Awards. Many British thespians glamed it up for the evening but I would be remiss if I didn’t express my disappointment in the lack of wow-worthy gowns on the red carpet.
Actress Kara Tointon’s floor sweeping strapless red gown was very elegant. Complete with a perfectly pulled back coif, smoky eyes and sheer pink lips, Ms. Tointon’s look was a winner. Ballerina Tamara Rojo’s black strapless gown was gorgeous but would have stood out more had she worn a statement necklace or more color on her face with red lips. She gets style points for the over sized leopard clutch.
Wicked’s Louise Dearman stunned in a black gown with sheer lace detailing enveloping her décolletage. She kept her blond tresses down with tendrils framing her fames. A side swept style would have showed off more of the neckline of the dress but her rouged lips and nails perfectly complimented the dress.
Actresses Danielle Linekar and Jill Halfpenny both opted for knee length frocks for the occasion but looked equally chic doing so. Ms. Linekar’s black frock with tan piping was perfectly styled; opting for closed toed tan slingbacks and gold accessories to complete her look. Ms. Halfpenny styled her red lace frock with a black jacket and black peep toe pumps and completed her look with rouged lips and an updo.
The night belonged to Legally Blonde’s Sheridan Smith, who won Best Actress, wore an light blue strapless frock with layers congregating at the bust in the form of a rose. The dress wasn’t on my best dressed list but the her pencil thin heeled pumps elevated her style a little more. Olivia Williams’ dress didn’t wasn’t really a standout but I appreciate the leopard print. Summer Strallen, Sierra Boggess and Rachel Sterling also get a nod for looking fabulous on the red carpet.
