I ventured outside of the tents on Wednesday night for the launch party of Something Rebellious by Benjamin Jay, a premium t-shirt line that screams high fashion. The party was held at West Chelsea’s newest hotspot Juliet Supper Club. My friend Rick and I knew the night was going to be great with a strict door list and a long line of well dressed New Yorkers and Fashion Week vets lined up outside the door. The venue was the right spot for the launch of Something Rebellious, a brand I had fallen in love with at first glance online.
Something Rebellious is the brainchild of former model Benjamin Jay, who has taken the concept of tees to another level with high fashion t-shirts and legwear. I got the chance to see up close the high quality of the lightweight pima cotton graphic tees, tanks and leggings. Models, both male and female, displayed the twenty-two year old designer’s capsule collection. The softness and feel of the silk blend tops and shirts was stellar. What sets Something Rebellious apart from other t-shirt companies is the graphics. For instance, models wore white crew neck and v-neck tees with dog tag chains that created the illusion of necklaces that were actually actually printed onto the shirt.
I told Benjamin that I’m looking forward to a full collection from him soon. With his collection of t-shirts, cardigans and leggings for women and graphic t-shirts for the gents, that is being well received, I am confident that he will be branching out soon. Though he cites New York and Hollywood as locales for his muses, I can see nightlife aficionados and hipsters in Washington rocking Something Rebellious tees.
