My friends in NYC and Los Angeles poke fun at the fact that most women riding the metro in the morning look square in their shapeless skirts, pants and boxy jackets. There is some truth to this. Yes a lot of the professional women in the city wear suits to work and yes sometimes it’s a hit or miss. There are however fashionistas in the city that can stop traffic in their put together looks. Venture into Georgetown, U Street or Adams Morgan and you will see an eclectic style.
It is imperative that women get the basic pieces: a shell, sweater, button down shirt, sheath dress, skirt, dress slacks, large bag, durable commuter shoes, brown pumps, black pumps and pearls. If you can get these pieces in your wardrobe, you can build your work closet from there. One important rule: Play with color.
The first in my series of dressing better for your career starts with this showstopper look. Each piece can be coordinated with other pieces in your closed to create different looks. In the upcoming entries, I will create the same look in different price ranges for every fashionistas budget. Stay tuned.
