Bill de Blasio was sworn in on New Year’s Day, becoming the 109th mayor of New York City. Mayor de Blasio’s wife Chirlane McCray, and daughter, Chiara de Blasio both chose to wear Nanette Lepore for the occasion.
You see, when Ms. Lepore reached out to the de Blasio a year ago to discuss the preservation of the Garment District. The importance of supporting local designers is a message being pushed aggressively by New York designers. The new administration’s recognition of that strengthens their alliance with the fashion industry.
“Chiara and I are proud to wear this beautiful clothing today, that was made right here in New York City,” said McCray in a statement. “This city needs more creative entrepreneurs like Nanette Lepore who are committed to keeping our city’s garment industry thriving.”
Let’s hope to see the de Blasio clan wear more New York designers. We’re hoping to see some DKNY, Tracy Reese and Rebecca Minkoff on Chiara and Donna Karan, Oscar de la Renta, Jason Wu and emerging designer like Rolando Santana on Chirlane.
