I can’t get enough of the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute tribute to Alexander McQueen. As you know the 2011 Costume Institute Gala was held last night and if you follow the Twitter conversation, you would have known that guests pulled out all the stops for this one. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the gala.
Daphne Guinness stole the show in terms of loyalty to the McQueen brand with her feathered gown, however, there were stellar standouts I must give some shout outs to. Christina Ricci in Zach Posen set the red carpet ablaze. That body con silhouette with the mermaid train was simply breathtaking. Diane Kruger could do no wrong in a Jason Wu gown with a nude bodice and a black skirt with slits waaaaaaaay up the thigh. Those legs go on for days and days and boy does she know how to pose in that gown.
Twilight star Ashley Greene was uber glamorous in a strapless Donna Karan gown with beautiful beading. Sarah Jessica Parker, who contributed to Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition wore a vintage McQueen gown that fit her like a glove. Doutzen Kroes, Gisele Bunchen and Diana Agron looked radiant in red. Kroes in Giambattista Valli, Bunchen in Alexander McQueen and Agron in Michael Kors. Gossip Girl starlets Blake Lively and Leighton Meester were like night a day. Lively, in a draped nude and gold custom made Chanel frock with Karl Lagerfeld on her arm (he was in Tom Ford); and Meester in a daring strapless knee-length black dress from one of her favorite fashion houses, Louis Vuitton.
Livia Firth, Madonna and Eva Mendes wore Stella McCartney. Madonna, for once, dressed age appropriate for the gala and looked absolutely stunning in doing so with the back and tail of her gown emblazoned in stars. Anna Della Russo’s Alexander McQueen pant suit was a delight the perfect get-up for the gal who loves playing dress-up so much. That egg fascinator on her head would have made Lady Gaga jealous. Isabella Lucas and Serena Williams also get our nod for sassy headpieces. Anna Wintour wore Chanel Haute Couture, while Zoe Saldana opted for a neon yellow Calvin Klein gown that complimented her bronzed skin.
Iman proved women and girls her age couldn’t hold a candle to her in a gold sequin jumpsuit. Solid gold! Speaking of solid gold, Bar Refaeli, Claire Danes, Elizabeth Banks and Kristen Bell struck gold in their metallic gowns. Bell in Tory Burch and Danes in Calvin Klein. Ginnifer Goodwin’s green gown surprised us, not because it didn’t look good (it looked gorgeous on her) but because it was from Topshop.
As for the men, Hamish Bowles gets our best dressed for his tartan McQueen ensemble that looked so regal and polished. Kanye West wore a Tory Burch suit and looked so hot in it that we could swear he was fogging up the lens. Is this Tory’s forray into menswear? We hope so. Collin Firth, John Legend and Chase Crawford looked as handsome as always in their traditional tuxes. Firth’s jacket had some texture, which we loved.
As for dramatic, I would be remiss if I didn’t give that award to the ever fabulous and over-the-top Vogue editor-at-large, Andre Leon Talley, who ascended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in regal blue.
Oh! A special shout out to Leelee Sobieski, who made a rare appearance on the red carpet in a gorgeous custom-made Vionnet ivory silk crepe de chine dress with a gold leather laser cut leaf belt. Leelee we need you back in movies STAT!
