It’s espadrille season! Time to dust off the summer shoe staple we’ll be seeing on just about everyone. The espadrille is my favorite style of shoe for summer because of its comfort and effortless style. I own several pairs in different styles and wear them from spring through fall with everything from dresses to shorts and denim. I have acquired quite a few pairs over the years and own espadrille styles from Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Soludos, Alexander McQueen, Stuart Weitzman and Castaner. Most espadrilles are made to be comfortable and easy to walk in so they are the perfect shoe style to wear for your next vacation as well.
What is an espadrille?
Hailing from Spain, the espadrille is traditionally a roped-soled flat shoe made of esparto rope used by North Africans and Southern Europeans to make baskets and cords. The upper portion of the shoe is usually made of canvas, though different materials like leather and mesh fabrics are now used to make more fashionable espadrille styles. What started as footwear for “peasants” has now evolved into a staple in the summer style vernacular of those who summer in the South of France, the Hamptons, Martha’s Vineyard, the Mediterranean and more. Espadrilles now come in high heeled wedges, platform sneakers and the ever popular wraparound styles. They can be as inexpensive as 8€ at the Auchon supermarket in France to as much as $1200 for my Louis Vuitton Starboard Wedge Espadrilles.
You can wear espadrilles just about anywhere and with almost anything, save for a black tie or semi formal event. You can wear espadrille styles to work, especially for summer Fridays and those with a more relaxed office dress code. I have worn some of my espadrilles to weddings and fancier summer parties in the Hamptons.
As a petite woman, I gravitate toward the higher wedge style espadrille styles for additional height. The wraparound detail is so romantic and feminine and is perfect for my ankle grazing midi and tea length skirts and dresses. I added this Ralph Lauren ballerina leather espadrille to my closet last year. It’s my highest espadrille but its also very comfortable. This style is sold out but the brand released a canvas version of it in both cream and army green.
