How to Wear a Duster for Summer

Autumn is creeping into the rear view mirror as we drive into the thick of summer with back-to-school sales and what not. Just this week, Nordstrom kicked off its annual Anniversary Sale, which for Americans, signals fall and winter shopping. As you contemplate what to buy for the upcoming months, I want to make a case for one item I’ve always had in my closet in one form or another, the Duster jacket.

What was originally worn by equestrians to protect their clothes have now become a mainstay in women’s fashion. From Chrissy Teigen to Solange Knowles, celebrities and the everyday woman has flocked to this piece of garment as a layering piece to complete her outfit. I own several dusters in different fabric weights and styles and reach for them to cover up either for modesty or to keep my shoulder warm when the temperatures dip.

I have several iterations of the duster, some in satin, some in knit and others covered in sequins and other embellishments. They all have their purpose and they find their way into my outfits all year round. In the spring and summer, I reach for lighter weight dusters in airy chiffon and satin to layer on top of slinky satin slip dresses and denim. I opt for heavier dusters serve as a coat on crisp autumn nights. Dusters also give a boho vibe to daisy dukes.
