A friend once told me that decorating a home is a work in progress. You are never quiet finished putting those last finishing touches on interior decorating. I just got started designing my bedroom and it’s one of the most tedious tasks I’ve embarked on. Since moving to Brooklyn, I’ve decided to redo my bedroom with a different color palette and a more contemporary style. After what seems like weeks of research and style typing, I decided on a white and gold color scheme with turquoise accents.
As you can recall, I bought the Baxton Carlotta Tufted Bed (currently on Groupon for $349 in black or white) in white early December when I moved. Since this is the focal point of the room, I have decided to keep my sheets white with turquoise accents. I found a few gorgeous bedding options from Restoration Hardware, One Kings Lane, Joss & Main and Overstock that are similar in style to what I am looking for. I want the crisp hotel bedding in white with an accent stripe border around. The Restoration Hardware Italian Hotel Bedding is perfect but it’s going to set me back a few hard earned dollars. I have been perusing flash sale sites in hopes of finding something similar. In the interim, I am sleeping on a nice sheet set I bought from HomeGoods and the Target ‘Colette’ comforter set.
My roommate has the IKEA Hemnes Nightstand ($69), which compliments by bed perfectly. I am going to switch out the drap knobs that come with the stands for a jeweled turquoise set from Anthropologie, which are about $8 a piece. I love the Violette Knobs as well. I’ve seen several bloggers do this as part of their IKEA Hemnes nightstand ($69) hacks and it looks pretty easy. The dresser is the IKEA Hemnes Three-Drawer Dresser ($149). I am switching out the existing knobs with gold ones I found at Menards for $1.99 and using a set of overlays painted gold from MyOverlays.com to upgrade the dresser. The top of the dresser will hold perfumes, jewelry and other beauty products. I need a few nice lucite organizers and trays for them. The wall of the dresser will get a sunburst gold mirror.
I found a tall ornate dressing mirror at Burlington Coat Factory the other day for $44.99. It currently has a tarnished silver look, which I intend to strip and paint gold. One corner of my room will house the IKEA Billy Bookcase ($59), which I am obsessed with for not just books but to hold purses, shoes, hats and other odds and ends. I have ample lighting during the day but I don’t really like the overhead light. I purchased two exquisite lamps from Restoration Hardware years ago. They have a black base and oatmeal colored lampshade. I am going to upcycle them by painting the base gold and switching the shades for a white one. I am not going to clutter up my wall with a lot of art. Instead, I have four framed Jessie Kalisher black and white photos that will go over my bed gallery style. Across my bed will be either a wall mounted television (I am not sure I should have a tv in my room) or a series of shelves.
I intend to post a few of the projects here as part of my DIY series. Let’s hope they all come out looking great. On another note, I am thinking of painting my walls – currently light blue – white or an eggshell color. The previous tenant decided to paint the entire room with the blue color, including the closet door, curtain rod and ceiling. I am tired of looking at it because there are patches of white still on the walls. Yea it’s time to start painting, which I will tackle this coming Friday.
