If you thought Nicola Formichetti was going to end up in the unemployment line after his departure from Mugler this week, you thought wrong. The avant garde designer and favorite of Lady Gaga just landed a new gig as the Artistic Director at Italian denim brand Diesel. Looks like WWD really called this one.
Formichetti, in his new gig, will be responsible for every aspect of the Diesel operation, which includes, product development, communications, marketing and interior design. Though his intention is to acclimate himself with business and operations aspect first, his five to ten year plan is to expand the Diesel brand into “high fashion and couture to streetwear and activewear.”
Does this mean we’ll be seeing some uber expensive denim pieces a la Balmain circa 2008? If anyone can turn Diesel couture, it’s Formichetti, whose creations land on the front pages of major fashion mags and even gossip rags with Lady Gaga as a patron.
