Kmart Style Challenge: Holiday Outfits Under $100

December 9, 2011

A few weeks ago, my friend PJ Gach of Betty Confidential and I decided to go head to head in a friendly styling competition at Kmart.  The mission was to find two outfits, one dressy for a holiday party, the other casual for drinks or brunch with the girls, for $100 or less.  Say what? Yes you read it right, two complete outfits for under $100.  Now under any other circumstance, I would have had a good chuckle and told her she was absolutely crazy for suggesting such a thing, but this is Kmart we are talking about, the mecca for frugalistas like myself, who want classic and on-trend pieces without breaking the bank.

PJ and I met up with @KmartFashion to shop to our heart’s content for fabulous outfits.  I had an idea of what I wanted to put together because I kind of live at Kmart, not even kidding.  I had a mental checklist of what I wanted from Sofia Vergara’s collection and a few pieces from Attention and Jaclyn Smith, my three favorite brands for women at Kmart.  I made a mad dash for a black and gold metallic sweater dress from Attention that was on sale for $20.99.

The Attention Women’s Long Sleeve Sweater Dress is a stunner and looks so posh that I have been wearing it non-stop for going out with the girls or just to evening previews.  The dress shown in the first picture almost made it into my cart but didn’t because I would have gone over my budget significantly.  It’s a sexy leopard number from Sofia Vergara that hugs all the right curves and vamps up the decolletage. When paired with the Sofia by Sofia Vergara Blazer ($41.99), black opaque tights and vertiginous heels, it’s all sorts of right.

To go with my Attention Sweater Dress, I picked up a pair of Sofia by Sofia Vergara Tipsy Red Carpet Pump for $21.99, which ended up going with both outfits so I saved a lot in the shoe department.  If you happen to stumble into the store, they’re having a by one get one half off (BOGO) sale. Just in case you are wondering about the fit of the Attention sweater dress, it runs true to size and forgiving if you have curves.

For my second outfit, I headed to the Jaclyn Smith section of the Kmart store to find a colorful dress that would go under my Sofia by Sofia Vergara Velvet Blazer.  With budget in mind, I ended up finding a gorgeous pink dress in a flattering A-line silhouette on sale for $10.49. Yowza! I can tell this dress is going to be a favorite this season and next because of its versatility.

I ended up buying several pieces of jewelry from the Sofia by Sofia Vergara line for myself because I fell in love with all her accessories.  The black and gold watch looks so expensive and goes with everything in my closet. I don’t think I’ve taken it off since purchasing it.  On another note, Kmart offers insurance for your jewelry for just $2.99, so if your it ever breaks or needs repair, they will exchange it or fix it for free for two years. Uhmm hello! I love it.

Honorable mention goes to this dress from Kmart’s Slimfabulous Women’s Cap Sleeve Dress ($19.79), which smooths and sucks you in for a fabulous fit.  I don’t know why I didn’t choose this dress but I loved the fit and length.  So ladies, you can’t go wrong if you pay attention to what your wardrobe challenges are and tackle Kmart’s fashion department with a plan of attack.  So man your carts and get to shopping.

Editor’s Note: I was gifted with $100 gift card for my purchases but paid for the jewelry with my own money.
