Maison Martin Margiela releases first fragrance "Untitled"

April 27, 2010

Designer Martin Margiela has given the fashion world avant garde designs for decades.  Rumors of his imminent departure from his eponymous label surfaced last year and were later confirmed.  Margiela is perhaps one of the most elusive and mysterious designers, rebuffing the spotlight by never showing his face.  He's stayed relevant since his catapult into the fashion world with an logo-less brand that has a cult following like no other.

Now on his way to becoming a household name in the hip hop community through mentions in Jay-Z songs, Margiela's popularity has translated into increased sales of his men's and women's lines.  This year, the House of Martin Margiela announced a new fragrance that promises to stay true to the designer's philosophy of not being commercialized.  The intentionally ambiguous fragrance called Untitled,  is the labels answer to the over saturated and celebrity driven fragrance industry.  Untilted is simple; created to celebrate the fragrance itself, the label says it is a green/woodsy unisex scent with a strong presence of galbanum (which smells like grass and aromatic herbs), and notes of bitter orange, incense, jasmine and cedar.

Untitled was created under the direction of Margiela himself before his departure in December.  The simple ad campaign features a woman holding the bottle with shadows strategically covering her breasts. The fragrance bottle delineates the emotion and the intent of its contents with the designer's name and the words "Untitled" type written on white paper.  Untitled is available in the US at all Maison Martin Margiela stores and online at Colette.  A few photos from the photoshoot for the ad campaign were posted on the Margiela Facebook fan page last week.
