I rarely go to the movie theater to watch new releases. I usually wait until movies come on DVD to watch them. The only time I go to the theater now is for a really compelling movie or one with a fashion or shopping theme. My must see movie this season is Confessions of a Shopaholic based on the novel “Confessions of a Shopaholic” by Sophie Kinsella. The movie hits theaters next weekend and I’m sure the fashionistas will be itching to see the movie the day it arrives.

Now you know I love you all so I want to do something very special for my readers in Washington, DC. I got the hookup for passes to go to the advance screening of Confessions of a Shopaholic staring Isla Fisher next Thursday, February 12 at 7:30 pm with MIX 107.3 and Touchstone Pictures. For one night, you can live Rebecca Bloomwood’s (main character) glamorous life with pampering, goodies and more. PR and Partners will be on hand providing complimentary stylings. There will be lots of prizes and contests galore but the main attraction is the chance to see the movie before it comes out. You must dress to impress to win major prizes.

So here’s the sitch. I am giving away four pack passes to eight lucky readers. Each winner can take three of her friends with her to the event. So all in all, I am giving away 32 passes. Yup, I love you that much. Winning is pretty easy.

Leave a comment on this post answering the question: What was your major shopaholic moment?

I will choose eight people to win. Leave your email address as well so that I can get you all the info once I announce the winners. I will choose winners each day starting on Monday. Contest ends on Wednesday. Once winners are announced, I need to get the names of the people who will be going with you so that you will be on the list. Happy commenting.

Last summer, in a reward to myself for finishing my graduate school classes and getting a raise at work, I spent $700 at J. Crew in under 30 minutes. I really love Sophie Kinsella’s books too, so please pick me, Makeda!

What recession? I’ve been in major shopaholic mode for the past month in preparation for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NY next week. I’m stimulating the economy. šŸ˜‰

  3. Carissa says:

I felt it was my duty to personally help the economy by buying not 1, but 2 new Betsy Johnson's, one of which was $400. That is so not my price range & I've been eating mac n cheese 3 nights a week and skipping happy hours to make up for my weakness for dresses. I also feel it necessary to attend more events than I can afford and will likely be wearing one of said dresses at Jete tonight. I'm sure to see you there & pick me Mak because I loved the book and want to see it or take me to the movie šŸ™‚

I have a shopaholic moment every year when the tax return check comes! My husband has also determined I am putting Sohpie Kinsella’s children through college! Not only do I own the entire shopaholic series I also have all of her books written under the name Madeleine Whickam! So please pick me!!!

My major shopaholic moments all occurred while working at a DC favorite boutique, Urban Chic (perhaps the beginning of my addiction). After a few Shoshanna dresses, couple pairs of Citizens, Sevens, and Paige’s, a Kooba bag, and Kenneth Jay Lane gems to accessorize – I found myself dodging bank statements just like Becky! Ignorance is fashionable bliss. But I was the best dressed at my senior ball in silver Catherine Malandrino amongst a sea of black BCBG. Plus, Confessions of a Shopaholic’s bills were all in pounds, and that’s so much worse, right?…

I was at the Ferragamo outlet in Italy two summers ago, all the shoes were so amazing so I had a yes pile, a no pile, and a maybe pile! I finally walked to the register with 6 pairs of shoes……the must haves of my yes pile! When they went to ring me up the amount was more than my available credit. So I called Chase bank in America, they said they had no problem approving the amount but it would just increase the APR on my card to 28%. I said that is fine! So i walked out of ferro with 6 new pairs of shoes….a ridiculous smile and an APR that kills me every month! The real kicker….I have not even worn one of the pairs- they are so beautiful and I do not want to ruin them!

My major shopaholic moment wasn’t really a moment at all but just the events leading up to one very awkward conversation with my mother….
I lived in Florence (Italy, not South Carolina) for a semester in college and conveniently turned my walk to school and, yes, home from school into a two hour experience going into every store on the way. I conveniently took the “scenic route” past the Ferragamo Museum, Fendi, Armani, Gucci, etc etc etc… Every day, twice a day. Needless to say I also asked my parents for TONS of funding to “go on educational trips” every weekend. Little did they know that those educational trips consisted of jaunts to Gucci and Intissimi and other such “educational” establishments.
So my mom and sister came to visit and everything went fine for the first three days. I hid all my new goods in the back of my closet and thankfully they stayed in a hotel. But on the fourth day my mom decided to take us shopping and began to get suspicious when every shopkeeper knew my name. But she didn’t speak italian so I was in the clear until Paola – my very fave Sisily attendant came out to meet my mother and told me that my special orders were ready. i was totally busted and if you knew my mother you would wonder why I still have my extremities…. I’ve been paying them back ever since. But my 1950’s vintage Gucci purse reminds me that it was all worth it….

Shopping is like chocolate … it fixes any bad day, and unfortunately we’ve all had our fair share of them. After a quite traumatizing boy experience (can you believe it?), I most definitely made my mark in the shopaholic hall of fame. I have a very classic style, and a firm believer that there’s never a bad time to be wearing pearls; if you feel beautiful, then you look beautiful.

Back in June, my bff Lilly Pulitzer helped me through a difficult time. I splurged purchasing 3 new dresses, a bathing suit, matching pool bag, and sunglasses (new to her line this past summer, and a must have). After my retail therapy, I went right to the hair dresser, chopped my hair (ah!) then went on vay-cay with all of my lovely ladies! Nothing says ā€œI’m over youā€ like a new wardrobe and boost of confidence to show-off šŸ™‚

Like you, I also rarely go to the movie theater to watch new releases but couldn’t think of another movie that I’d love to do this for! I’m a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella and can’t wait to see what the big-screen’s done with her masterpiece!

  9. Seda says:

After watching a documentary on the history of high heel shoes on the History Channel I become inspired. I turned the TV off with a drive that led me to my nearest mall. That night I came home with 5 new pairs of high heels, a pair of Ed Hardy sneakers and a pair of high heel boots. Quite an amazing day šŸ™‚

  10. Catalina says:

Ummm, I just want to see the movie. Whoever wins, can I be one of your three dates? That is all. Thank you.

When do I win something? šŸ™‚

  12. Elle says:

After putting myself through grad school while working full-time, it was time to treat myself! I did a ton of online and in-person (read: drooling over jewelry counters) research before purchasing a pair of beautiful Akoya pearl studs. They are gorgeous, classic, and chic. Every time I wear them, I think of my success. Trends come and go, but those earrings will be with me forever. I could never go “all out” like a true “Shopaholic,” but I think it’s important to treat oneself! We all deserve it.

Well, there have been so many, but none that I felt too guilty about, since I had a decent job and was able to pay off my bills…until I got laid off the week before Christmas.

I was out to lunch in Tysons Galleria right after I found out I was getting laid off, and found myself right next to the Coach store. I had a 25% off coupon so of course I had to go in. Mind you I have multiple Coach bags (one even unused) that I don’t use anymore, a 6-month old Botkier, an unused Botkier and an unused Rebecca Minkoff, so in no way could I justify buying a new bag in these dire economic conditions, about to be laid off after 9 years given a month’s severance. I was just going in to look….but I ended up walking out with a beautiful $600 berry patent leather large Zoe bag that made me so happy – well, until I got the bill!

I would love to go see the movie (I’ve read all the books), so I can live vicariously through Rebecca, since there will be no more shopping (or movies) for me until I’m lucky enough to get another job!

My major shopaholic moment this past fall. Yes, I know we are in a recession. This didn’t stop me from taking advantage of all the sales. Specifically, the SAKS 70% off sale that started in November. I had sales assistants in the NY Store, Santa Barbara, and South Coast Plaza (Orange County) scouring the racks for Loubies, Guiseppies, Miu Miu, and the like. After two days of insanity I realized that I had spent more than $3000 in shoes.

Sure, the shoes were a good deal, but did I honestly need them all? No. Will I get to wear them all? I’ll try. Did this stop me from then going to the Chevy Chase and Tyson’s location to purchase tons of Milly and DVF? Absolutely not.

Lesson learned–it’s good to have Sales Associates in other cities, especially ones that have are in other time zones–you get the best merchandise and dont have to deal with that dreaded “velvet rope.”

I woke up in the middle of the night, decided that everything in my life would be better if I just had all of the matching summer outfits in the Spiegel catalog (is there still a Spiegel catalog). I ordered A LOT—and promptly went back to sleep. I woke up with one of those “was that a dream, or did that really happen” moments and found the well marked catalog next to my bed. I cancelled the order.

After i got my first paycheck, i decided to trow a party with all my girlfriends.
After a couple glasses of wine, i found myself typing in my credit card number into the online checkout at VictorisSecret. One week later, i got four large packages. Its been more than a year- and i still don’t need any new underwear.

  17. Amy says:

As a college student I’m working on a pretty tight budget; but I wiggled my way into a couple Inaugural balls through volunteer work.

At the start of January I had no gowns and one really old cocktail dress. I am now the proud owner of five floor length gowns and six cocktail dresses, and two new pairs of pumps (to accompany the 32 pairs of shoes already packed into my dorm room closet).

I would love an opportunity to get some use out of my purchases. Fortunately, I purchased more then half the dresses second hand. Still, it was a month’s paycheck (well spent).

When we had our first real cold snap in November, I decided that none of my clothes were going to be warm enough for the chilly winter in DC so I went on a shopping spree at Neiman Marcus (aka the Mother Ship). I bought everything from new winter coats to alpaca lined boots. By the time I got home I realized that there was no way I could afford all of my new clothes and buy groceries for the next two months…but my new purchases were just too amazing to return.

So desperate times call for desperate measures, and thats just what I did…

I knew that I wanted to keep all my fancy new clothes, and have an opportunity to show them off…and I did not want to starve to death! Since I knew that going out with the girls for dinner and drinks was impossible with all of my new credit card debt, I decided the only way I could wear my clothes and still get to eat was to go on dates.

So, I created an online dating profile, chatted with a few guys, picked the least sketchy looking men, and set up 3 dinner dates for the next week…which turned out to be 3 of the worst dates of my life! All three of the guys lied to my about their height, and I was significantly taller than them all. One of my dates had just gotten out of prison! One of my dates failed to tell me that he was deaf…and because I do not know any sign language, we had to communicate for the entire 2 hour date by writing on napkins! And the last date asked me during dinner if he could stroke my feet! The hours of torture I had to endure that week just to get a nice meal and to be able to wear my new dresses were not worth it. I gave up my dating scheme, but because the clothes had been worn I could not return the them. Instead, I have lived mostly off of roman noodles and crashing Congressional receptions in order to pay off my credit card bill. Being able to keep the clothes is totally worth the terrible diet, but now I’d love to get to wear them to something like this movie premiere!

being a wife and a young mom, your almost forced to give up the shopaholicism! But when we had our son I gave myself a “push present” and bought myself 3 pairs of jeans (seven jeans, true religion and citizens). What better way to lose all that aby weight right!?!

I’m with Catalina, if I can’t win I would love to be someones plus one šŸ™‚

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie! If its anything like 'Devil Wears Prada,' I will definitely enjoy myself. My major shopaholic moment that was while working at Nordstrom's in 2007, we had just received the latest Marc Jacobs satchel ($1025) & it was payday but it was rent week too. I decided to take the plunge and buy the latest accessory item and pay for my late rent with my reinburstment check from school. Two weeks later I brought the matching wallet. I promise my priorities are in order now! I learned a valuable lesson after paying late fee's. My job is feeding my habit!
