Ghana Meat Pie Recipe

My mom used to make these flaky, delicious meat pies back in Ghana and she still makes them when I go back home to visit. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty with this dish. It requires just a whisk and your hands so don’t worry if you don’t have a fancy Kitchen Aid mixer.

We used to serve this warm meat pie with a cold bottle of Coca-Cola back in Ghana. It’s was the perfect after school treat or Saturday afternoon snack.  The only thing I hated doing was rolling the dough, which was the only way my mom would make this for me.  Follow this recipe and the result will be a flaky meat pie to wow you guests.

You can make these ahead and freeze the unbaked meat pies in freezer bags and pop them in the oven for 30 minutes.  I usually serve this now as a meal with a fresh side salad and a nice beverage. Try this and let me know how it turns out.
Ghana Meat Pie RecipeAnother fun filling for the summer can be crab or lobster. Cut a large Russet potato into small cubes then heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in onion and potatoes. When onion is translucent, add 1 can (16oz) of crabmeat and stir. Reduce heat to low and cover. Cook for approximately 10 more minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cans Corned Beef
  • 1 medium white onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Black Pepper
  • 4 Cups of Flour
  • 8 oz of Butter
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1 Teaspoon nutmeg
  • 5 tablespoons of cold Water
  • 1 Egg

Directions

  1. 1. Prepare the dough by mixing the flour, salt, butter and nutmeg with a ladle until soft then egg and water in a bowl. Knead the dough by hand and then place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven at 375F.
  2. 2. Chop the onion, garlic. Heat oil in a large pan and cook the onion and garlic for 3-4 minutes until transluscent.
  3. 3. Add Corned Beef to onion and garlic and cook for 8 minutes. Season with pepper. Do not add salt since Corned Beef is already salty.
  4. 4. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll out into a thin sheet. Cut out round sheets to use to make the pies.
  5. 5. Fill the beef pies by placing the cooked meat on one half of the shell. Seal the by folding over the empty half and pressing the edges with a fork. Brush whisked egg onto the top of the sealed meat pie and place on a baking sheet.
  6. 6. Place meat pies in oven and bake for 15-18 min or until golden brown. Serve warm
  7. I love to serve this with a nice arugula salad
