Fashion trends are not for everyone and especially crop tops, which cropped up on runways for spring/summer 2013. Even before temperatures started rising, celebrities like Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, Diane Kruger, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez wear baring their toned tummies in the season’s newest trend.
The runways led the way with designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Balenciaga Charlotte Ronson, Mara Hoffman, and David Dixon sent models down the runway in variations of the cropped top, which included tailored tops, cropped bustiers, Fifties style boob tubes and dressier lace crops.
Crop tops came in boxy cuts, sporty styles, feminine bustiers and dressier versions. Alexander Wang gave us sporty tops layered under boxy draped crop jackets. DKNY also gave us a few sporty color blocked crop tops paired with leather accented A-line skirts. Prada gave us printed boob tubes that were paired with eyelet jackets and elastic waist skirts. Topshop Unique, Tod Lynn and Guy Laroche paired their tailored crop tops with high-waist evening trousers and comfy cardigans.
Wondering how to wear this trend without looking dated? Whether printed, mesh or lacy, crop tops will look on trend when paired with a pencil skirt or A-line silhouette skirts. Tailored and boxier crop tops will complement tailored trousers nicely. The most important element of pulling off a crop top is fit. A poor-fitting crop top can cause a muffin top or create the look of a saggy bust, so don’t become a fashion victim. Fit the top to your body and you will look fabulous.
