Come Christmas, the long awaited movie Sparkle, staring the late Whitney Houston, Jordan Sparks, Cee Lo Green and Tika Sumpter hits theaters. The buzz surrounding this movie got amplified by Houston’s passing earlier this year. As some of you know, this movie has been in the pipeline for over a decade. R&B singer Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in 2001 was supposed to play the title role. The movie was put on the back burner until last year, when a new group was cast. Of course Houston, ever so vocal on all matters pertaining to her career, had a role to play in designing the costumes she wore in the movie, created by B. Michael.
The designer is due to launch his first ready-to-wear collection of dresses for Macy’s called B Michael America Red, which will hit stores starting this August. He talks candidly with Women’s Wear Daily on Whitney giving him direction on creating the proper costumes for church scenes. He tells the paper that the late singer said to him:
“Come on B. My mother would never wear a sleeveless dress to church,” Houston said. “If I’m in church singing, I am going to raise my hands high. I need something dramatic for the sleeves.…You’re the designer, B. You go create these sleeves.”
The costumes in the new movie look amazing. Check out the trailer below.
