Stella McCartney Unveils Team GB Uniforms but Are Brits Happy With It?

March 22, 2012

Stella McCartney, today, unveiled her designs for the British Olympic team at the Tower of London.  The designs, under the Adidas label, will be worn by over 600 atheletes during the Summer’s Olympics in London.  The uniforms for Team GB feature a deconstructed Union Jack with a mix of blue and white with red and turquoise details.   Thirty Team GB Olympic hopefuls models to looks today during the media unveiling.

“The first place to start on a project like this is to look at the Union flag,” said McCartney. “It was important for me to stay true to that iconic design, but also to modernize it and present it in a contemporary way. Ultimately, we wanted the athletes to feel like a team and be proud with the identity we created.”

As nice as the Team GB uniforms are, the designs drew criticism from Brits, who think McCartney did not include enough red in her designs.  Here are a few comments from the Team GB Facebook page slamming the designs:

Rubbish, no flag, little red, are we ashamed of our National Flag?

– Where is the flag i am so proud wearing? its not only the olympics its OUR Queens diamond jub, where havent they used that as part of the kit design.

– Team GB…or Scotland? Where’s the ‘red’ in our red, white and blue?

– If it’s one of the most beautiful flags of the world who the hell are you to modernise it Stella? Cheeky mare, money for old rope, that’s what this is. We should be proud of our flag the way it is!!! Can you imagine any other Country changing the colour of their flag – stupid woman.

– What a disgrace, Firstly if you must use the union flag in an abstract way then the very least you can do is use the correct colours for the relevant parts of the flag used.

– WHERE is Northern Ireland in all this – for the past few years N. Ireland has been left out of the team name – we are NOT Team G.B. we are Team G.B. & N. I. So all you people who are complaining about the St. George’s flag can now understand how the people of Northen Ireland have felt about being left out. No I was not born nor do I live in N. Ireland. Please include N. Ireland in our team in future – remember Mary Peters.

The rants go on and on but there are a few positive comments mixed in.  So you be the judge and tell us what you think of the designs.
